PRESS RELEASE:

Lake Horowhenua & Hokio Stream: Iwi and hapū advance the restoration of their taonga

Members of Muaūpoko and of Ngāti Pareraukawa have taken the first steps in cleaning up this taonga/treasure. Sediment is being removed from the lake with equipment that will run ten hours a day.  A $3,500 donation has been invested in a pump and attachments to begin the removal of sediment.  The project will be supervised by engineer Ronnie Gillies whose mother is from Tuhoe and Muaūpoko advocate and Lake kaitiaki Philip Taueki.

This initiative, though small, will complement the work to be done by the five-member Lake Accord which has been the recipient of $1.27m from public sources to finance the Accord’s plans for the Lake.

The Honourable Sir Douglas Kidd, who was born in Levin in 1941, was recently appointed by Maori Affairs Minister, Sir Peter Sharples, to serve as a Judge on the Porirua ki Manawatu District Inquiry. Sir Douglas was appointed in 2004 to serve on the Treaty of Waitangi Tribunal.

An urgent hearing was held over two days in Wellington last week before Sir Douglas and Professor Emeritus Sir Tamati Reedy with Deputy Chief Judge Caryn Fox presiding. Lake Horowhenua is the major taonga of Mua Upoko and the lower north island.

A public meeting was held in the Anglican Church Hall in Levin on Sunday 16 March, by the Joint Working Party (JWP) on Lake Horowhenua and the Hokio Stream which was established in June 2013 by members of Muaūpoko and Ngāti Pareraukawa.  An enthusiastic audience received a presentation on the initiative’s progress to date and plans over the next 12 months.

Those in attendance were treated to a special screening of “Beneath the Surface”, a documentary on the environmental degradation of the Lake and stream. Produced by Nicki Atkinson from Otago University, “Beneath the Surface” has been entered into “Wildfest”, the largest environmental film festival in the world!
